Addressing the Checkout Assistant Who Made Me Completely Speechless – Kudos to You
This occurred on a Sunday morning, and I was grumpy enough, filling up my mother's vehicle. This was one of those petrol stations that operates as a supermarket, meaning there's a chance of ending up in line customers carrying goods of slightly overpriced groceries. A terrible fate to occur when the sole aim is to pay for some fuel. Terrible.
My position was fourth among those waiting. Just one cashier operating, a female attendant. Something stood out to her presence. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had at last settled for his Viakal, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, I was certain overhearing the cashier tell him to have a great day. Strange. Perhaps I’d misheard, or possibly she uttered it and used a mocking tone. I pondered if she could even be a supporter in my battle with dithering, reflecting my irritation for individuals slowing down straightforward customers like me.
I moved up, becoming the third customer. The new leader of our group finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “Have a wonderful day.” To be precise, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? At this location? She had the accent, and few locals says to others a wonderful day, or simply a good day. Highly unusual. Rarely does one encounter people from America visiting this town, certainly not employed at gas stations or other places.
Now I stood second. Behind a poor older woman embroiled in a protracted effort with her carryall, her groceries, her wallet and her rewards card. This took an eternity. Once completed, she as well received the wish to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. I could have confirmed it by saying something hilarious at the cashier, to observe that thing when they look at you, unsmilingly, and reply with genuine earnest: “That’s really funny.” However, nothing occurred of a jest to say.
In the end, I embraced for the absolute sincerity – or an impersonation of it, essentially the same as identical in effect – while she stared me right in the eye, piercingly, and told me an awesome day. It improved my mood. A positive experience.
