Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is developed, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
