Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
