LeBron James's Record-Setting Point-Scoring Streak Ends, But Los Angeles Pull Off Triumph Over Raptors.
James understood his monumental run of putting up 10+ points was in danger. At the decisive instant, however, it didn't concern him.
The smart move meant distributing the basketball – which is exactly what he did. With that selfless act, his remarkable run finished.
LeBron's staggering run of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season games with 10+ points was snapped during a recent game, when basketball's greatest scorer finished with a mere eight points during the Los Angeles Lakers' close triumph versus Toronto. He made the clutch helper, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura for a three-pointer to win the game.
“None,” James said when asked on the record concluding. “The important thing is we won.”
An Unselfish Play Delivers the Win
LeBron had the chance to tried to secure the game – and preserved his record – in the closing seconds, yet he opted to pass to his teammate in the left corner. Hachimura sank it, and James celebrated immediately.
“Just playing the game the right way. Make the right play,” James explained. “That’s just been my M.O.. It's how I was instructed to play. I’ve done that for two decades.”
He is acutely aware exactly how many points he's scored at all times,” stated Lakers coach the coach. He made the play as he has done so many times.”
The Streak's Final Moments
James re-entered the floor one last time with just over five minutes left, the outcome and his personal record both hanging in the balance. At that stage, he had a mere six points from 3 for 15 from the field then.
He managed a basket with under two minutes remaining to knot the score and missed a 14-footer with 1:01 left which could have taken him to double digits.
He didn’t take a subsequent shot – but could have. A teammate found him as time wound down, however, James opted to dish it off instead.
The basketball deities, when you play it the proper way, they often bless you,” Redick added.
Reflecting on an Unparalleled Streak
James's streak started on Jan. 6, 2007. It was, by far the greatest such streak in professional basketball: His Airness, Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and Karl Malone was fourth on the list with 575.
“He’s such a team-oriented player,” remarked Lakers center a fellow Laker.
He focuses on playing the game of basketball. The chance was there but due to the player he is and just who he is as a person, he executed the team play, passed it to Rui and claimed the game.”
Reaching double digits had typically been an afterthought early in the fourth quarter began. Throughout his run, he had reached double figures by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
Yet two of those unusual games below ten points through three quarters took place just days before: He recorded nine going into the fourth versus the Mavericks on 28 November, and then had six points going into the fourth against Phoenix on Monday night.
LeBron was able to preserve the record against the Suns. One game later, it was over – and he celebrated anyway.
I only ever make the right play. That is instinctive, regardless of outcome,” James affirmed. When you make the right play, the sports deities consistently rewarding me.”
