Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
