Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
The English team has chosen a twelve-player selection just two days before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
