The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Objections by Egypt and Iran
Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations Alongside City Celebrations
Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Legal Context of Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Flags and Banners
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.
