The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
