The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue future success.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he said after the win at Manchester.
